This stock medical exhibit depicts the progression of hydrocephalus with eventual herniation of the brainstem. The first image shows a normal sagittal view of the head and neck. The second image shows the same view with a blockage in the fourth ventricle causing severe hydrocephalus. The final image shows the pressure from the hydrocephalus causing the brain stem to herniate through the foramen magnum. An inset shows the site of herniation in greater detail.
