This exhibit depicts a segmental fracture of the tibia and a fracture of the fibular shaft. Surgical repair is performed to stabilize the tibial fracture by inserting an intramedullary rod into the tibia across the fractured segment and secured in place with screws. Subsequent surgery was necessary because of no-union of the segmental fracture. This time bone is harvested from the femur using an aspirator reamer, the old hardware is removed and replaced, plates with screws are used to further stabilize the segmental fracture and bone graft is placed around the fracture lines to promote bone fusion.
