This medical exhibit demonstrates two sequential surgical treatments for invasive breast cancer. The surgery shown at left involves the excision of a breast mast from the right breast. A curved incision is made into the breast in the region of the mass. The mass is excised free from the surrounding tissue and sent to pathology lab for evaluation. The right side of the exhibit demonstrates a subsequent modified radical mastectomy. A larger, curved incision is extended from the earlier surgical site into the axilla (armpit) and out to the midline of the body. In the image below that, the tissue of the right breast and axillary lymph nodes are dissected free and removed.
