This stock medical exhibit depicts patellar chondromalacia with chronic pain. The first illustration shows a medial view of normal anatomy of the bones and ligaments of the extended knee. The second illustration shows the same view of knee anatomy in a partially flexed knee, including the femur, tibia, the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle, the patella and the patellar ligament. The third illustration shows the same view of normal anatomy, but with the knee fully flexed. The fourth illustration shows chondromalacia in the extended knee. The fifth illustration shows chondromalacia in the partially flexed knee, including chondromalacia of the patella and irritation to the articular surface of the femur. The sixth illustration shows chondromalacia in the fully flexed knee.
