This stock medical exhibit illustrates right and left carotid artery dissections with subsequent brain injuries. The first image (left) is an anterior view showing the area of dissection and the initial injury. The brain, cerebral arteries, Circle of Willis, basilar artery, and carotid arteries are labeled. The next two images demonstrate the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) due to the damage and the subsequent joining of thrombus particles with the bloodstream (formation of emboli). The final graphic presents the brain injuries resulting from the clots traveling in the blood stream. These injuries include a bilateral subcortical infarct and a cortical infarct of the left frontal and frontoparietal regions.
