Hyperstimulation of the Uterus and Hypertonic Uterine Contractions - Medical Illustration, Human Anatomy Drawing
These series of illustrations begins by showing a full term fetus in a vertex position within the mother's womb going through uterine contractions before birth. In this case, there has been administration of Pitocin to the mother to stimulate uterine contractions. In greater detail to the right is shown the compression of the vascular supply to the pregnant uterus during hyperstimulation of the uterus which results in greater, more frequent and prolonged uterine contractions. A normal baby in this scenario will become hypoxic. A fetus who has been weakened by prolonged labor is not able to recover resulting in permanent brain damage.
